Compress PDF to 40KB

Medium

This tool compresses a PDF to 40KB in your browser, with no upload and no watermark. Of the very small targets people ask for, 40KB is the one where a scanned page still looks like a document rather than a rough impression of one. Our 628KB test scan finished at 39.9KB with its text left selectable.

How Readable Is a 40KB Scan

We compressed the same 628KB scanned A4 page to each of the four small targets and compared the results side by side. The pattern is steady rather than dramatic, and 40KB is where small print stops being a guess.

TargetResultWhat the page looks like
20KB19.9KBBody text readable on screen, small print soft
25KB24.8KBSlightly firmer edges on small print
30KB29.8KBComfortable on screen, still soft when printed
40KB39.9KBCleanest of the four, holds up when printed

The difference between 20KB and 40KB is only 20 kilobytes, but it is the difference between a page that survives being printed and one that does not. When your upload rule allows 40KB or 50KB, there is no reason to aim lower.

How to Compress a PDF to 40KB

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box above, or use Select PDF to choose it.
  2. The target is already 40 KB, so change it only if your form specifies something else.
  3. Hit Compress PDF. Everything happens on your device, so it starts immediately.
  4. Save the file from the result card, which shows the size you actually reached.

Several files can be compressed in one go, each to the same 40KB target.

What Does 40KB Do to a Two-Page Document?

At 40KB you have genuine room for a second page, which the tighter targets do not really allow. Two scanned pages get about 20KB each, and that is still enough for readable body text on screen. Three pages at roughly 13KB each is the point where quality starts to fall away quickly.

The compressor works on the whole file rather than page by page, so it balances the budget for you. If one page is a dense photocopy and another is a mostly empty signature sheet, the empty page needs less and the dense page keeps more. You do not have to plan any of this yourself.

Your File Is Never Sent to Us

Compression happens inside your browser tab, so the PDF stays on your device from start to finish. Pi7 receives nothing, stores nothing and has nothing to delete. That is the honest version of privacy for a tool like this, and it is why there is no upload progress bar anywhere in the process.

Local processing brings practical benefits as well. Large files skip the upload entirely, there is no daily quota to run out of, and no account is needed. Encrypted PDFs are handled on your device with the password prompt appearing in your own tab. Once your file is the right size, you can add a page number or a label with the watermark tool before sending it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 40KB small enough for government upload forms?

It clears the common 50KB, 100KB and 200KB caps. Some forms also set a minimum size. 40KB sits above the usual 10KB or 20KB floor, which makes it a safe figure when a form gives a range rather than one number.

Will compressing to 40KB blur my document?

A single scanned page holds up well and is the cleanest of the four small targets we tested. Blurring becomes obvious when several pages share the 40KB budget, or when the original was a colour photo of a document rather than a proper scan.

What happens to a text PDF that cannot reach 40KB?

Fonts and text cannot be compressed the way images can, and one six-page file we tested would not go below 217.6KB while keeping its text. Pi7 then converts the pages to images to reach 40KB and says so on the result card, so you know the text is no longer selectable before you send the file.

Can I get an exact 40KB file rather than 39.9KB?

The tool always lands just under the target rather than exactly on it, because upload rules written as "under 40KB" reject a file that measures exactly 40KB. If you need a larger file to satisfy a minimum, our increase PDF size tool pads it upward instead.
